Precision locating of decommissioned fuel tanks in Bendigo
Martlec was engaged to precisely locate decommissioned underground fuel tanks at an old fuel depot in Bendigo. The investigation also needed to identify nearby underground pipes, cables and other services before the client progressed with an upgrade of the site.
The client’s broader plan included assessing whether the old fuel tanks could be safely removed. Before excavation could be considered, they needed a clear understanding of exactly where the tanks were positioned and what other underground infrastructure was located around them.
Locating underground tanks, pipes and cables
Leigh used ground penetrating radar (GPR) to investigate the area and determine the position of the decommissioned fuel tanks. Martlec also investigated the surrounding ground for underground cables, pipes and other services that could affect the proposed works.
The investigation identified additional underground infrastructure in close proximity to the old tanks. This information was critical because removing the tanks as originally proposed could have interfered with nearby services.
Rather than stopping the project, Martlec’s findings allowed the client to reconsider parts of the proposed works and adjust their plans before excavation began.
Underground service locating that influenced the project
This investigation demonstrated why underground service locating is important before major excavation or redevelopment work.
Martlec located the underground fuel tanks. Martlec identified nearby pipes and cables. The client used those findings to change the proposed works and avoid disrupting existing underground infrastructure.
Having this information before work commenced helped the client avoid significant problems that may otherwise have only become apparent once excavation was underway.
